Gabbehg are hand-knotted Persian rugs that are primarily characterized by their simpler abstract patterns and greater thickness, which makes them very comfortable to walk on. Gabbeh rugs are hand-knotted from wool with a lower knot density, long pile and a very soft surface. Sometimes the rugs can be as thick as 2.5 cm, which makes them considerably thicker than other Persian rugs. If the yarns are dyed, it is always done with natural dyes, which gives the rugs their soft and pleasant color shades. The simpler pattern design is playful in character with decorative rectangular objects (often depicting animals) and large open geometric color fields. Red and yellow colors are often used and thanks to the use of natural dyes and the looser knotting, the color tone varies across the rug. This means that each rug (even solid-colored rugs) has uniquely beautiful color shifts and a vibrancy that makes them easy to decorate with.
From the city of Shiraz come carpets that are knotted according to the region's traditional methods. If the wool yarn is dyed, it is always done with natural plant substances, resulting in muted, beautiful color tones. Shiraz carpets often fit very well into Scandinavian interior design thanks to their soft colors and rustic craftsmanship tradition.
Please note that Gabbeh rugs are also knotted in India and there is a big difference in quality between Persian and Indian Gabbeh rugs, with Persian rugs being much higher quality. The Persian Gabbeh rug is much softer and more durable.
