New extinguishing agent intended for grease fires
Fires in cooking fat and cooking oil are very difficult to extinguish and there is a very high risk of re-ignition.
Burning fat has a temperature of approx. 400o C. The self-ignition temperature is normally 330 to 350o C. This results in re-ignition occurring after extinguishing if the fat has not been cooled below the ignition temperature. The extinguishing agent should therefore also remain on the grease surface and prevent re-ignition.
None of the existing extinguishing agents meet these requirements. Therefore, a new type of extinguishing agent has been developed and is being used. It consists of a potassium-based salt solution. In extinguishing technology, the salt solution reacts chemically with the cooking fat and provides a multiple extinguishing effect as follows:
-
The liquid saponifies and together with the fat forms a soap-like blanket over the fat
-
The water in the liquid evaporates and cools grease and sheet metal surfaces
-
Additional cooling is obtained by the salt solution
reacts with the fat and forms CO2
